This led to his eventual trek to Houston, TX, to meet with Secretary of the Treasurer Henry Smith in hopes of exchanging his soldier’s warrants for money.

The two became close friends, leading to his marriage to Smith’s daughter, Harriet. Then, in the 1870s, the Fultons shipped cattle from Rockport to New Orleans, accruing a large sum of money.
